سُورَةُ العَلَقِ


بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ

In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace

ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ (۱)

READ in the name of thy Sustainer, who has-

خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مِنۡ عَلَقٍ (۲)

created man out of a germ-cell

ٱقۡرَأۡ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلۡأَكۡرَمُ (۳)

Read - for thy Sustainer is the Most Bountiful One

ٱلَّذِی عَلَّمَ بِٱلۡقَلَمِ (۴)

who has taught [man] the use of the pen –

عَلَّمَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمۡ یَعۡلَمۡ (۵)

taught man what he did not know!

كَلَّاۤ إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ لَیَطۡغَىٰۤ (۶)

Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening

أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰۤ (۷)

whenever he believes himself to be self-sufficient:

إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجۡعَىٰۤ (۸)

for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return.

أَرَءَیۡتَ ٱلَّذِی یَنۡهَىٰ (۹)

HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent

عَبۡدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰۤ (۱۰)

a servant [of God] from praying?

أَرَءَیۡتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰۤ (۱۱)

Hast thou considered whether he is on the right way,

أَوۡ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقۡوَىٰۤ (۱۲)

or is concerned with God-consciousness?

أَرَءَیۡتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰۤ (۱۳)

Hast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]?

أَلَمۡ یَعۡلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَرَىٰ (۱۴)

Does he, then, not know that God sees [all]?

كَلَّا لَىِٕن لَّمۡ یَنتَهِ لَنَسۡفَعَۢا بِٱلنَّاصِیَةِ (۱۵)

Nay, if he desist not, We shall most surely drag him down upon his forehead

نَاصِیَةࣲ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةࣲ (۱۶)

the lying, rebellious forehead! –

فَلۡیَدۡعُ نَادِیَهُۥ (۱۷)

and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom,

سَنَدۡعُ ٱلزَّبَانِیَةَ (۱۸)

[the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement!

كَلَّا لَا تُطِعۡهُ وَٱسۡجُدۡ وَٱقۡتَرِب ۩ (۱۹)

Nay, pay thou no heed to him, but prostrate thyself [before God] and draw close [unto Him]!
